Your Relationship May Be Throwing Off Your Sleep

There are plenty of ways that sleeping with your significant other can throw of your sleep. Like if they snore. Or talk in their sleep. Or take up 82 percent of the bed. But of all the ways that sleeping with someone else can get in the way of a restful night, one of the biggest is the quality of your actual relationship. A rocky relationship can mean the difference between mornings where you wake up well rested and nights spent tossing and turning.

A study published in the Sleep Medicine Review Journal reveals a direct correlation between happy relationships and consistently restful sleep. Conversely, the study found a link between unstable relationships and poor sleep. Essentially, a good night’s sleep demands a sense of safety and security at bedtime, which can explain why an unhealthy relationship – one that undermines your happiness and spikes your stress levels – can get in the way of your sleep.  Happy relationships, on the other hand, can bolster your self-esteem while reducing physiological and psychological stress responses, meaning that they’re more likely to play into better sleep.

 

Sleep affects everything in our lives, from mental health to immunity, so it’s always good to know what aspects of our lives are in turn affecting sleep. With relationships being high up on the list, it makes sense to pay close attention to the dynamic between you and your significant other. At the end of the day – and more importantly, the night – relationships aren’t meant to be a source of constant stress, but of joy and mutual support. And when it comes down to it, the research proves that individuals in happy, stable relationships sleep remarkably better than those who aren’t, and that happily married couples in particular have far less trouble sleeping than their unhappily married and unmarried counterparts. Plus, happily married couples are half as likely to experience insomnia than married and unhappy couples, according to the study. So if waking up on your side of the bed suddenly starts to feel more and more like waking up on the wrong side of the bed, it may be time to dig deep and ask yourself whether or not an unhealthy or toxic relationship may be the root of the problem.
