The Time of Day You Exercise Offers Different Benefits

As humans, we’re creatures of habit, and being a morning or night person can have a strong impact on your workout routine. However, the benefits of working out, such as better sleep and muscle recovery, can vary depending on the time of day that you exercise. See how your workout time might be determining the benefits you’re reaping, and try switching things up next time you exercise to get the most out of your fitness routine.

Working Out in the Morning

If you normally work out at night, getting some exercise into your morning might seem like a daunting task. You have to fit in going to the gym, showering after a tough workout, and still making it in time for your commute. Waking up an hour or two early to fit in a morning workout, though, will actually improve your energy levels and boost your mood for the rest of the day, enabling you to be more productive.  Working out in the morning will also take advantage of the elevated testosterone levels in your body, which peak in the early a.m. hours. Plus, chances are that the gym will be emptier than usual in the morning, so you can follow through with your high-volume training system without worrying about crowds around the weight station.

Working Out in the Afternoon

While your afternoon is usually reserved for your lunch break, working out then can also help improve your body’s peak performance. According to Christopher Colwell, a neuroscientist and professor at the UCLA Brain Research Institute, exercise can chronically impact the body’s internal clock and circadian rhythms. And if you’re like most people, your biological rhythms can be seriously thrown off by sleep troubles or an inconsistent sleep schedule. Afternoon workouts serve to remedy this, as exercising in the middle of the day effectively pumps more protein through your body and helps build and repair your tissue. This makes an afternoon workout an ideal fit for you if you’re struggling to stick to a constant bedtime and need muscle recovery. If you’re typically an early riser, try being a night owl for a change. Not only will exercising later in the day help tire you out before bed – it’ll also relax your muscles so that you can fall asleep faster. Plus, an evening workout is especially beneficial to you if you’re into lengthy high-intensity workouts, since at night, you can go right to sleep after you’ve exercised and showered to give your muscles a rest.
