Science Just Confirmed that Beauty Sleep is a Real Thing

Given how tough it can be nowadays to actually get a full night of quality sleep, we’d all probably love to believe that the whole “beauty sleep” thing is a total myth. (If I’m struggling to clock 6-8 hours of good sleep a night, the last thing I need is to feel like that lack of sleep is making me unattractive, too.)

Unfortunately, beauty sleep may be more legitimate than you think, at least according to a recent study published in the Royal Society Open Science Journal.

As part of the study, which was funded by Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University, 25 male and female participants were photographed make up-free after several days of normal and not-so-normal sleep. While one group had been allowed eight hours of sleep each night for two consecutive nights, the second group was only given four hours of sleep each of the two nights.

After the photos were taken, a group of 122 strangers was asked to rate the photos according to how much the strangers wanted to socialize with the subjects of the photographs, in addition to factors like attractiveness, health, sleepiness, and trustworthiness. Save for trustworthiness (sleep deprivation apparently has no bearing on how much people are willing to confide in you, so you can rest assured in that department), people who looked sleepy had lower scores across the board.

According to the study, the results suggest that people are less likely to interact with sleepy-looking individuals because of two main things. First, there’s innate fears like disease avoidance – i.e. sleepy people don’t look all too healthy, so strangers might not want to risk their own health by interacting with them. And then there’s just general social considerations – i.e. sleepy people tend to look a bit unpleasant, and don’t look like the source of positive social interactions.

So even though there’s already plenty of major reasons that good sleep should always be high on your list of priorities, consider this one more reason to hit the hay earlier and get enough shuteye each night.

Worried that trouble getting to sleep each night is getting in the way of your beauty sleep? Rest assured – with reBloom at your side, you can ensure night after night of quality sleep, which is basically the same as ensuring that you look your best day after day.
